Just like you don’t bring a burger to a pizza party, today’s EV manufacturing demands cuting-edge innovation and wise direction in business. It’s a area, teeming with tech where savvy equals, but does not guarantee, survival. What was once the domain of mechanical engineers has now expanded to welcome electrical, software and tech engineers to the fold. Where demand, fuelled by interest, create flash sales 9 minutes post-launch securing 10 000 orders (G7 SUV by Xpeng). Xiaomi is not new to the game. With established savvy and partners like Leica and Snapdragon, and a presence in the development of the AIoT, Xiaomi is a company who is less about competing on price and more about redefining the product category; building the epitome of mobile phones.
Xiaomi is a Chinese multinational corporation and technology company headquartered in Beijing, China. Servicing 44 countries, it is best known for its consumer electronics, software, and electric vehicles. It is the third-largest smartphone vendor in the world as of 2025, behind Apple and Samsung, most of which run on the Xiaomi HyperOS operating system. The company is ranked 338th and is the youngest company on the Fortune Global 500. It has been called the “Apple of China”. 1
The Canadian federal government has negotiated a new trade deal with China, bringing in 49 000 EVs with a reduced duty of 6.1% to Canada.
The new $2.3 billion program will offer individuals and businesses purchase or lease incentives of up to $5,000 for battery electric and fuel EVs, and up to $2,500 for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) with a final transaction value of up to $50,000 on cars made by countries with whom Canada has free trade agreements. In the Jan. 30 – Feb. 2, 2026 survey, 61% of Canadians were in favour of Chinese EVs in the Canadian market. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said, during a recent parliamentary committee hearing, that Ottawa would ensure “safeguards” are put in place.1
