Guide to Decide

Vehicle Fitness

1. Hybrid System & Battery. The hybrid battery is the most expensive component to replace, so this section is critical.

  •  Battery Health Check: Ask for recent hybrid battery test results or have a shop run a battery health scan (state of charge, cell imbalance, etc.).
  •  Service History: Look for records showing hybrid system servicing or any battery-related work.
  •  Warning Lights: Check the dash for any hybrid-related warnings (e.g., VSA, check engine codes).

2. Engine & Transmission. Even though it’s not a performance car, basic mechanical health is vital.

  •  Smooth Start-Up: No hesitation, rough idle, or strange noises.
  •  Engine Noise Under Load: Acceptable to hear engine at higher revs, but listen for knocking or rattling.
  •  CVT Transmission: Test for smooth, linear acceleration; no jerking or slipping.

3. Electrical & Dashboard. The Insight uses digital displays and electronic feedback.

  • Digital Instrument Panel: Ensure display functions correctly (no missing pixels or flicker).

  • Eco Indicators & Gauges: Confirm eco-meter and energy-flow displays work properly. All Electronics:
Power windows, locks, audio system, lights, and air conditioning.

4. Fuel Efficiency. This is likely one of the main reasons you’re considering an EV.

  •  Driver Impression: During test drive, record approximate average MPG — target ~40+ MPG combined if possible.

5. Interior & Comfort. Functional but basic — inspect for wear and tear.

  •  Seat Condition: Check driver’s seat for wear, sagging, or stains. Cabin Noise:
Listen for excessive wind or road noise at highway speeds.

6. Suspension, Brakes & Steering. Important for safety and comfort.

  •  Brakes: Firm pedal, no squealing or grinding.
ABS should activate smoothly in hard stops. Suspension:
No clunks or excessive bounce over bumps. Alignment:
Car should track straight with hands lightly on the wheel.

7. Exterior & Body. Check the basics that often reveal hidden issues.

  • Rust & Corrosion: Particularly around wheel arches, under doors, and undercarriage. Paint Consistency:
Uneven paint or overspray can indicate past body repairs. Lights & Lenses:
No cracked or fogged head/tail lights.

8. Tires & Wheels. Safety and handling depend on them.

  •  Tire Tread: Even wear across all tires; uneven wear suggests alignment issues.
  • Correct Tire Sizes & Matching Brands: Mismatched tires can affect hybrid system calculations.

9. Previous Ownership & History. Important context for long-term value.

  • CarFax / History Report: Check for accidents, title issues, or odometer discrepancies.

  • Maintenance Records: More records yields a better understanding of vehicle health. Get access to them (with permission from the seller) through the dealership where the vehicle was serviced.

10. Price vs. Value. Compare to market prices and condition.

  •  Market Research: Compare pricing in your region (private sale vs. dealer).

Negotiation: Use inspection findings to justify a fair offer. Remember, the seller knows their vehicle. Be careful to use findings to justify, not to blame.

Final Buying Indicators

The vehicle is worth serious consideration if:

  • Hybrid battery shows good health
  • Clean service history
  • Drives smoothly, no warning lights
  • Good fuel economy during test drive

The vehicle warrants extra attention if:

  • Battery health is unknown or bad
  • Evidence of major accident damage
  • Significant engine/transmission issues
  • Suspension or electrical issues that cost more than the car’s value to fix.

The Buying process

Buying any used vehicle can be stressful. There may be no warranty and many components which contribute to reliable motoring, some visible and others not easily seen.

We’ve had generations to familiarize ourselves with terms (carburetor, fuel injection, air filter..). EVs however, are pretty new to most. Take your time and seek professional guidance and opinions.

What we do have is familiarity with dealing with other humans. Trust your instincts when interacting with the seller. If they aren’t forthcoming with answers to your questions, ask yourself why?
