Today’s EV manufacturing brings a paradigm shift in the craft. What was once the domain of mechanical engineers has now expanded to welcome electrical, software and tech engineers to the fold. As such Xpeng, a tech company which makes automobiles, is well suited. However, in this age, hitting the ground running is necessary, if one is to compete with established brands. To that it’s important to note that Xpeng, despite seeming ingenue, have backers with strong heritage to call from, namely Volkswagen group, Xiaomi (also a competitor) and Alibaba; getting by with a little help from friends. What does that mean? Think Cicero and his silver hairs. Through VW, Xpeng will have the benefit of automotive rear-view mirror experience at their beck and call to refine their path. Through Xiaomi, they’ll have sight-lines to the AIoT by a company who is less about competing on price and more about redefining the product category; building the epitome of mobile phone. And through Alibaba, well, everything else.
From the horse’s mouth: XPENG is a leading Chinese Smart EV company that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets Smart EVs that appeal to the large and growing base of technology-savvy middle-class consumers. Its mission is to become a smart technology company trusted and loved by users worldwide. In order to optimize its customers’ mobility experience, XPENG develops in-house its full-stack advanced driver-assistance system technology and in-car intelligent operating system, as well as core vehicle systems including powertrain and the electrical/electronic architecture. XPENG is headquartered in Guangzhou, China, with main offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Silicon Valley and San Diego. The Company’s Smart EVs are mainly manufactured at its plants in Zhaoqing and Guangzhou, Guangdong province. 1
The Canadian federal government has negotiated a new trade deal with China, bringing in 49 000 EVs with a reduced duty of 6.1% to Canada.
The new $2.3 billion program will offer individuals and businesses purchase or lease incentives of up to $5,000 for battery electric and fuel EVs, and up to $2,500 for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) with a final transaction value of up to $50,000 on cars made by countries with whom Canada has free trade agreements. In the Jan. 30 – Feb. 2, 2026 survey, 61% of Canadians were in favour of Chinese EVs in the Canadian market. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said, during a recent parliamentary committee hearing, that Ottawa would ensure “safeguards” are put in place.1
As of this writing, we cannot confirm which, if any of Xpeng’s offerings will arrive on Canadian shores. This spotlight shines light on their line-up.
